WHAT IS A DENTAL PROSTHETIST?
A Dental Prosthetist is registered to manufacture partial and full dentures, including implant-supported dentures and mouthguards. Dental Prosthetists is the best practitioner to make your dentures.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE A DENTAL PROSTHETIST?
No, a referral is not necessary to see a Dental Prosthetist. You are welcome to book your first FREE consultation to discuss your treatment options.
WHAT TYPES OF DENTURES ARE THERE?
Dentures may replace all or only some of the teeth. The dentures that replace all the teeth are known as full dentures and they rest on the gums that cover the jawbones. Dentures that replace some but not all of the teeth are known as partial dentures. They attach to the teeth that are still present and also cover and rest on the gums and bone where the teeth are missing.
HOW LONG WILL DENTURES LAST?
Between 5 and 7 years. Just like natural teeth, dentures wear down and stain with age. Your mouth is frequently changing. To make sure your dentures fit properly, they will need adjustments from time to time.
HOW WILL DENTURES AFFECT MY EATING?
Adjusting to dentures takes time and patience, but you’ll get used to them before you know it. We will be happy to help you work through any challenges and explain the best ways to get used to eating and chewing with your new dentures.
HOW QUICKLY WILL I ADJUST TO DENTURES?
Dentures may feel strange at first. They may seem too big. This is normal. Once your facial muscles adapt, your dentures should feel very comfortable. Some people adjust to dentures within a few week, while others take a couple months.
WILL DENTURES AFFECT MY SPEECH?
There may be slight differences at first. Don’t be alarmed. Once your mouth is accustomed to the change, this should lessen. Reading aloud is an excellent exercise for helping to restore normal speech quickly.
SHOULD I REMOVE MY DENTURES AT NIGHT?
Every case is different. We will let you know what’s right for you. There are special precautions to take with your dentures when they are not being used.
CAN I USE STORE-BOUGHT LINERS?
Never attempt to reline your dentures. You could completely damage your dentures and injure your mouth. If you have any problems, call us. Adhesive powders and pastes may be used according to manufacturer’s instructions.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO RELINE DENTURES?
If the denture is no longer fitting as well as it once did, you may need to have a procedure done to refit the base of the denture, called a reline. Check with us to see if your denture can be relined.
